What is new urbanism? New urbanism is the approach of looking at designing and building urban cities in a way that ensures both space and comfort, along with making the amenities more accessible. The pioneers of the style Jaobs, Fulton, Calthorpe, and many more aimed to mix residential and commercials spaces, to provide living in its best scope. This was a step ahead of the previous designs which ad separate zones for residence and commercial spaces. The new urbanism would provide people with greater luxury to accessing goods and services, but also ensuring that the residential spaces do not get crowded. The scope of new urbanism had its focus on efficiency designing, but it would also benefit greater community participation by boosting community bonding, which was another important necessity for urban living. What three characteristics make an urban social movement particularly “urban”? Use two examples of urban social movements from the chapter to illustrate the ways in which urban social movements are embedded in their cities. Urban social movements are generically urban because they aim to achieve greater control over urban environment and policies through collective participation. Utilizing the essence of community bonding and sense of community, these movements fight united for justice and better opportunities in infrastructure, social institutions, and economic opportunities. For instance, the Black Lives Matter, fights for police brutality and racial discrimination against African-Americans, and is an example of urban social movement, exhibiting urban cohesiveness and strategies. Urban social movements are also characterized by an effort to collaborate collective consciousness towards reforming urban attitudes and behaviors towards different existential issues like LGBTQ and human rights.
